Sponsored Parent Subclass 870 Visa Extension

A concession to extend this visa by 18 months will be available to eligible visa holders. Associated sponsorship obligations will also be extended for the same period. You can apply for further visas to visit up to a maximum period in Australia of 10 years.

For Pacific Region Country Passport Holders: Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Timor‑Leste, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, the Base application charge for subclass 870 visa fees is A$1245; Second Installment for three years is A$4,855, Second Installment for five years is A$10,925.

For all other applicants the Base application charge for subclass 870 visa fees is A$1,515; Second Installment for three years is A$4,855, Second Installment for five years is A$10,925.

Be Eligible to Apply for Sponsored Parent Visa

To be eligible to apply for subclass 870 sponsored parent visa, you must be the biological, legal (including adoptive) parent, step-parent or parent in-law of the Parent Sponsor and be at least 18 years of age. There is no balance of family test or Assurance of Support requirements for this visa.

Genuine Visitor for 870 Australian Visa

You must only intend to stay temporarily in Australia and do the things you are allowed to do on this visa. If you have already lodged a permanent parent visa application, you may visit Australia, but not remain in Australia permanently while the application is being decided. This is a temporary visa only. You will not have the right to permanent residence. You cannot apply for a permanent or temporary parent visa if you have applied for or hold this visa.

How Long Sponsorship Lasts

Your sponsorship will end; if your permanent visa is cancelled, or if you die, or if you withdraw your sponsorship, or if the prospective visa applicant does not apply for a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa within 6 months after approval of the sponsorship, or the day the granted Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa ends. Some Parent Sponsor obligations will continue after the sponsorship ceases, including the obligation to pay any outstanding health debts incurred by the sponsored parent in Australia, even after their visa has ceased or they have left Australia.

You must meet Australia's health, character, Australian values requirement and owe no debt to Australian Government; and maintain Health insurance if you are granted the visa.

You must be an approved Parent Sponsor before a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 870) application can be lodged.

Time Duration to Lodge Visa 870 Application

After you are approved as a Parent Sponsor, the Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 870) application(s) must be lodged within 6 months of the sponsorship approval or 60 days if you have been given Permission to Apply in Australia.

Scope of the Sponsorship

Your household is limited to one sponsorship at a time. Your sponsorship can cover up to 2 parents per household at a time and you can sponsor: one or both of your parents, or one, or both, of your partner’s parents, or one of your parents and one of your partner’s parents.

Subclass 870 Visa Sponsor Income

Demonstrate a minimum household income of A$83,454.80 in the previous completed financial year. The income of the child’s partner and/or siblings (if in Australia) can be combined to meet this amount.

Where You should be located when you apply to become an approved Sponsor

You can be in or outside Australia, when you lodge your sponsorship application for visa 870 Australia.

Sponsorship Obligations

You must agree that you will provide financial support and accommodation for the sponsored parent while they are in Australia. This obligation ends if the sponsored parent is granted a permanent visa. You must inform the Department of Home Affairs if things change and if certain events occur, for example, if you are charged with a crime or the sponsored parent dies. This obligation ends the day after you cease to be a sponsor. You must pay back all outstanding public health debts incurred by the sponsored parent in Australia. This obligation ends when you have paid the debt back or have an approved arrangement in place to pay it back. You must pay the debt back even if the sponsored parent leaves Australia.
You will need to make your commitment to the obligations when completing the sponsorship application, and If you don't comply with your sponsorship obligations, the department may cancel your sponsorship and/or your parent’s visa.
